Four Pillars Expect Different

What do you get when you combine theatrical choreography, elaborate set changes, a single unbroken camera shot, and Australia’s most iconic premium gin? This is Expect Different, a new masterbrand campaign that takes doing things differently to a whole new level, bringing the wonderfully unexpected world of Four Pillars to life.

Let’s set the scene…

After years of explosive growth, premium gin is now a category in decline. And while Four Pillars continues to drive a disproportionate share of growth, what appeared to be a victory on paper was a warning sign in reality. After years of riding the premium gin wave, Four Pillars needed to translate its cultural capital into a compelling reason to choose the brand itself.

Because amidst iconic collaborations, cult releases, and category-defying flavours much of the brand’s equity remained at SKU level. What was missing was a distinctive point of view that connected them… an emotional anchor strong enough to outlast any individual release, and a masterbrand idea capable of carrying the whole portfolio.

Because in a category losing momentum, making more interesting gin wasn’t going to be enough… we needed to make Four Pillars the sole source of interesting.

What was really going on…

The once seemingly diverse gin shelf had started to feel increasingly predictable and replaceable. And with people drinking less often, and editing harder, the stakes of every choice were rising. Permission was our new battleground.

We were dealing with a decision-fatigued consumer who still wanted discovery, but only when it felt worth it… fewer brands, better options, less uncertainty, more reward.

This wasn’t the time to pile on more provenance, or more craft, or more flavours, we needed to make choosing something more interesting feel like the right choice. We needed to resolve the tension between surprise and trust, discovery and familiarity, and to give people the confidence that stepping outside the expected would be worth it.

This was a space Four Pillars already owned in behaviour, but we needed to own it at a brand level… interesting enough to choose and reassuring enough to choose again.

Expect Different.

Our masterbrand idea was deceptively simple. Expect Different captured the promise of Four Pillars in two words. ‘Different’ spoke to the curiosity, creativity and unexpected thinking that had always made the Four Pillars stand apart. ‘Expect’ gave that difference confidence, leveraging their reputation for taking unlikely ideas and making them taste bloody good.

More importantly, Expect Different gave us a creative brief in itself. Rather than telling people Four Pillars was interesting, we would show them. It gave us permission to take familiar drinking moments and introduce something unexpected; to play with flavour, characters, colour and craft; and to build a world where things were always just a little more surprising, helpful, playful, and interesting than you expected.

Making the everyday a little different-er.

To bring Expect Different to life, we started somewhere deliberately familiar: the relatable scenario of finishing up a day’s work, grabbing the train home, and kicking back with a drink. However, when you give this very ordinary, almost mundane, occasion the Four Pillars Expect Different treatment, this scene is reimagined into something playful, creative and unexpectedly theatrical.

Our hero film follows our protagonist through the key beats of this everyday routine in a hyper-stylised, colour-saturated Four Pillars world, where the environment continually shifts and evolves. And behind every transformation are four mysterious stagehands: the human embodiment of Expect Different, moving props, changing sets and making each moment a little easier, a little better and a whole lot more interesting.

Making different, differently.

We wanted the making of the campaign to reflect the making of the gin itself: considered, creative and properly hand-crafted.

So rather than relying on AI to manufacture the unexpected, the hero film was designed around a single, unbroken camera shot, featuring physical sets, live performances, and tightly choreographed in-camera transitions. The stagehands visibly move and transform the world as our protagonist travels through it, the mechanics deliberately left in the frame, to give a sense of visual texture and intrugue. Different made physical.

Four dots, myriad possibilities.

From there, we built a visual system that could stretch well beyond the hero film.

Four Pillars orange was elevated as a masterbrand asset, while the four dots became a playful recurring motif that could appear in different ways across the campaign. For OOH, individual gins appear through circular portholes, presented by the hands of the now-familiar stagehand. Placed together, these four executions reconstruct the Four Pillars mark at scale.

It gave the brand a world that could flex from masterbrand to individual SKU, from motion to static, without losing the thing that holds it all together: a recognisably Four Pillars way of making the familiar more interesting.

And then what happened?

This campaign was designed as a long-term masterbrand platform, launching across Four Pillars’ range and formats in late 2026, with the ambition of growing salience and helping build the brand towards its bigger goal: becoming the global benchmark for premium craft gin at scale.

More importantly, Expect Different gifts Four Pillars something it hadn’t had before: a simple idea capable of holding all of its extraordinary differences together.
